Proclamation – National Police Week 2023
“National Police Week”
May 14-20, 2023
WHEAREAS, in 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week; and
WHEAREAS, there are approximately 800,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the City of Goodland Police Department; and
WHEAREAS, the members of the Goodland Police Department play an important role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of our community; and
WHEAREAS, since the first recorded death in 1791, over 20,000 law enforcement officers in the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty; and
WHEAREAS, May 15 is designated as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of all fallen officers and their families and U.S. flags should be flown at half-staff; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, JJ Howard, Vice-Mayor of the City of Goodland, do hereby proclaim the week of May 14-20, 2023 as National Police Week in the City of Goodland and encourage all citizens to publicly salute the service of law enforcement officers in our community and in communities across the nation.
